YAZ is an ultra low dose once daily combined oral contraceptive containing 3mg drospirenone and 20mcg ethinylestradiol. It is administrated in a regimen of 24 days of active tablets, followed by a 4 day hormone free interval using inert tablets (24/4 regimen).
Drospirenone is the newest synthetic progestogen (a spironolactone analogue) that resembles endogenous progesterone and exhibits anti-mineralcorticoid and anti-androgenic properties, in addition to progestogenic activity. Ethinylestradiol is a commonly used synthetic oestrogen. As with other combined oral contraceptives , YAZ prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and exerting peripheral contraceptive effects.
- Clinical trials indicated that YAZ, in a unique 24/4-day regimen, is a good contraceptive option providing 99% contraceptive protection.
- Besides oral contraception, YAZ is indicated for treatment of emotional and physical symptoms associated with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder ( a severe form of PMS) and treatment of moderate acne vulgaris.
- The new 24/4-day regimen of YAZ helps reduce hormonal fluctuations, while extending the anti-mineralcorticoid and anti-androgenic benefits of drospirenone over three additional days, compared to the 21/7 regimen.
- YAZ is well tolerated, with adverse events generally typical of those experienced with other combined oral contraceptives.
