ALPHA LIPOIC ACID (ALA) & ACETYL-L-CARNITINE (ALC) : CARING FOR YOUR MITOCHONDRIA

Good health is related to the vitality of the cells. And to stay healthy each of the trillions of cells in the body must produce its own energy - cells can not borrow energy from each other.

In the cell, energy is created by microscopic structures called mitochondria. Mitochondria are known as the "power-plants" of cells because mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the biological fuel that drives the body. When we are young, our mitochondria produce enough ATP to keep us revved up. Most cells contain 500-2000 mitochondria. The more mitochondria the cells has, the more energy it can generate. Therefore, the heart being the hardest working organ has more than 5000 mitochondria in each heart muscle cell. However, as we age, so do our mitochondria. They lose their shape and structure, become hardened and produce less energy to keep us going. The energy shortage affects every cell and organ system in our body. Our immune system falters: making us more vulnerable to infections and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis..

Since mitochondria dysfunction was first described in 1960s, medicine has advanced in its understanding of the role mitochondria play in health , disease and aging. A wide range of seemingly unrelated disorders such as: Cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, fatigue(including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, strokes, migraine headaches and non-alcohol fatty liver have been linked to impaired function of the mitochondria, Mitochondria damage has also been implicated as a major contributor to the aging process!!!

Mitochondria have an outer membrane and an inner membrane which folds in on itself to create a shelf-like structure called Cristae. Cristae are important because they provide the platform on which ATP (energy) is made. Mitochondria are unique in that they not only have their own membranes, but they also have their own DNA. This means that cells have 2 kinds of DNA- the DNA in the cell nucleus which regulates overall cellular activity and the mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) which control mitochondria function. There are more than 200 inherited diseases associated with abnormal mtDNA. There is also compelling evidence that over the course of a lifetime,damage or mutation may occur to mtDNA which can cause problems.

Energy is produced in the mitochondria. Every time mitochondria make energy, they also produce free radicals which are very destructive and must be eliminated before they can do harm. The free radicals, if not eliminated, can cause terrible damage to every part of the mitochondria including its membranes and DNA. The mitochondria membranes are keys to energy production. If the membranes are damaged less energy is produced and toxins build up. A vicious cycle ensues, in which the membrane is first injured by toxins, and then subjected to even more injury because it is unable to get rid of the toxins it is still producing. The continued accumulation of toxins will ultimately damage the cell and if enough cells are damaged, this will interfere with the function of the organ.

Mitochondria DNA are very susceptible to damage by free radicals because they are not protected by proteins called histones (And unlike nucleus DNA which are physically shielded by histone from free radicals). Damage to mtDNA is related to the aging process. mtDNA damage in the brain is believed to be a factor in diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and strokes. Heart failure, the inability of the heart to adequately pump blood throughout the body is a classic example of mitochondrial dysfunction.

Extensive mtDNA damage accumulates over time leading to the destruction of the mitochondria and thus to cell death and the aging of the body.

To prevent free radical damage, cells recruit a set of antioxidants. A combination of Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl-L-carnitine and Coenzyme Q10 can help reduce mitochondria damage by free radicals and also, take care of mitochondria function.

CRYPTOMONADALES COULD AID IN BIRD FLU FIGHT

Although this is not a latest news, but i think i need to emphasis to everyone again since the bird flu strikes again in Malaysia. According to the news that published on Taipei Times (24 July2005), health officials said that extracts from algae could help immune systems fight the deadly avian flu virus after testing the technique on rabbits.

Researchers used a variety of algae for their research but found that chlorella and cryptomonadales grown in Taiwan had the best effects.

Although successful in their experiments with rabbits, they acknowledged that they have not tested the effects of the extracts on humans, because there have been no human cases of bird flu in Taiwan.

According to Prof. Su Yi-Jen, cryptomonadales has very high content of phycocianin and PPARs. (Peroxisomal Proliferator Activated Receptor). Prof. Su,who is an National Health Research Institute director in charge of clinical research, said that both the WHO and the disease control authorities of the US are trying to find herbs that contain these two elements, which could be used to control the activity of the virus. He claimed that if epidemic strikes, the algae extracts can be distributed as a substitute.

May be you will say that the experiments not yet done in human,but for me i think `SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING'

THE THREAT OF AVIAN FLU

H5N1 VIRUS FOUND IN SUNGAI BULOH VILLAGE

Today news: Petaling veterinary office received a report from a resident in the village on June 2 that 60 chickens had suddenly died over thee days. The virus was discovered and this is the first time the H5N1 virus has reappeared after the outbreak in Kelantan in March last year.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Zulkifli Idris said culling of chickens and birds within 1 km radius of the village started yesterday. Dr Zulkifli said the whole country has been put on red alert and officers in other states have been directed to monitor birds in their area. Good job Sir ! Keep it up !

Today's topic will talk about H5N1 or avian influenza!

WHO IS AT RISK ?

The risk of avian influenza to humans is almost entirely confined to those who have had close contact with infected domestic poultry. For people who have no contact with domestic or wild birds the risk is almost non-existent. To date, most human cases of avian influenza have occured in rural or periurban areas where many households keep small poultry flocks,which often roam freely,sometimes entering homes or sharing outdoor areas where children play. As infeced birds shed large quantities of the virus in their faeces, opportunities for exposure to infected droppings or to environments contaminated by the virus are abundant under such conditions. Exposure is considered most likely during slaughter, defeathering, butchering, and preparation of poultry for cooking.

IS IT TRUE THAT THE VIRUS CAN MUTATE TO FACILITATE HUMAN TO HUMAN TRANSMISSION?

There is concern that the virus - if given enough opportunities - will change into a form that is highly infectious for humans and spreads easily from person to person, but this has yet to occur. WHO 's investigation has found no evidence that the virus has increased in its transmissibility or is spreading from person to person. So far so good in Malaysia too!!

IS IT SAFE TO EAT POULTRY AND POULTRY PRODUCTS?

In areas experiencing outbreaks, poultry and poultry products can also be safely consumed provided these items are properly cooked and properly handled during food preparation. The H5N1 virus is sensitive to heat. Normal temperatures used for cooking(70 Celsius in all parts of the food) will kill the virus. Consumers need to be sure that all parts of the poultry are FULLY COOKED (NO "PINK" PARTS) AND THAT EGGS ,TOO, ARE PROPERLY COOKED (NO "RUNNY" YOLKS). Persons involved in food preparation should wash their hands thoroughly and clean and disinfect surfaces in contact with the poultry products such as hand wash liquid that formulated with chlorhexidine gluconate. (Please ask your pharmacist). Avian influenza is not transmitted through cooked food.

WHAT ARE THE CLINICAL FEATURES?

Initial symptoms include high fever(> 38 Celsius) and influenza-like symptoms.
Diarrhoea,vomiting, abdominal pain,chest pain, and bleeding from nose and gums have also been reported as early symptoms in some.
Respiratory distress, a hoarse voice, and a crackling sound when inhaling are commonly seen.
Sputum production is variable and sometimes bloody.
Almost all patients develop pneumonia and are unresponsive to treatment with antibiotics.
Clinical deterioration is rapid with respiratory failure ranging 3 to 16 days after symptom onset.
Another common feature is multi organ dysfunction.

PREVENTION
Avoid visiting poultry farms or homes where poultry is reared.
Avoid contact with live poultry and birds.
Avoid crowded areas and live in a place with good ventilation.
Wash hands thoroughly with water and an effective hand wash after handling poultry and poultry products.
Cook all poultry and poultry products thoroughly.
Observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
Build up a strong immunity in the body by observing a regular exercise regime,well balanced diet, adequate rest, reduce stress and refrain from smoking.
I suggest you may try cryptomonadales tablet too.Please visit www.taipeitimes.com./News/taiwan/archives/2005/07/24/2003264798

TREATMENT
Limited evidence suggests that oseltamivir (Tamiflu), can reduce the duration of viral replication and improve prospects of survival, provided they are administered within 48 hours following symptom onset. However, most patients have been detected and treated late in the course of illness. For this reason, clinical data on the effectiveness of oseltamivir is limited.The recommended dose of oseltamivir may be obtained from the product information insert.

DISTRIBUTION OF DENGUE VIRUSES & THEIR VECTOR

DENGUE ALERT

Yesterday news: Kangar's state assemblyman Datuk Loh Yoon Foo,who is state MCA deputy chief has been admitted to hospital for dengue. Thanks God,Loh is now in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, i just listened to radio's news that the number of dengue fever in Malaysia is increasing for this year. Therefore it is very important that everyone of us in Malaysia should know more about this killer.

Symptoms of dengue fever: Symptoms of typical uncomplicated dengue usually start with fever within 5 to 6 days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito.
1) High fever, up to 105 degree Fahrenheit (more than 2 days)
2) Severe headache
3) Retro-orbital ( behind the eye) pain
4) Severe joint and muscle pain
5) Nausea and vomiting
6) Rash
The rash may appear over most of the body 3 to 4 days after the fever begins. A second rash may appear later in the disease.By the way, most children infected with dengue virus never develop typical symptoms.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS ON ABOVE , PLEASE CONSULT TO YOUR NEAREST DOCTOR OR CLINIC IMMEDIATELY!!!

Treatment: There is no specific antiviral treatments exists nor is there any vaccine available. Treatment is only supportive.

Prevention:
1) Now, please spend 10 minutes surrounding your house,clear all the containers that capable of holding water or else this will provide habitat for the larval stage.e.g. water-barrels,rainwater tanks,wells, vases,tyres,bottles,pot plants saucers and tins.
2) Avoiding known mosquito infested areas, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
3) Using insect repellent,reapplying it regularly.Please consult your pharmacist for the best one.
4) Wearing long sleeved shirts and pants.

NO LARVAE NO MOSQUITOES,PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!!!!

ALLEYCATS

HOW TO CUT YOUR CANCER RISK?

Today news: Loganathan Arumugam , a founder - member of popular and widely followed Alleycats pop music band, died after losing a year- long battle with lung cancer.

At the same time, i also read a book from Vernon Coleman. He said we should be able to reduce cancer risk by 80% by avoiding those `triggers' which are known to be responsible for causing cancer.

Here is Vernon Coleman's advice:
1) Don't smoke and keep away from other people who smoke.
2) Cut your consumption of fatty food.
3) Do not eat meat.
4) Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
5) Eat plenty of fibre and whole grain foods.
6) Do not have any unnecessary X-rays.
7) Do not spend long periods of time in the sun
8) Avoid foods which contain large quantities of additives.
9) Keep your weight under control.
10) Minimise your consumption of alcohol.
11) Avoid smoked, salt-cured, salt pickled or barbecued foods.
12) Try not to live underneath or close to electricity power lines or close to an electricity supply
station. Do not sleep or sit too close to electrical appliances.

HOSPITAL PHARMACIST

HOW TO READ PRESCRIPTION(RX)

In Malaysia, there is no dispensing right yet for private pharmacy. Therefore if you go to visit doctors in private clinic, you seldom get prescription. What you need to do is just wait and get the medicine later from their dispensary. By the way,there is different practices in hospital .Doctors in hospital will write out a prescription for patient. Therefore it is very useful for patients to be able to read their presriptions themselves. This is because pharmacist may forget to put certain instructions onto the label or supply insufficient stock occasionally.

Here are some of the commonest abbreviations and their meanings

bd or bid-> twice a day
tds or tid->three times a day
qds or qid->four times a day
alt die -> alternate day
om -> every morning
on -> every evening
prn -> when needed
gutt -> drops
ung -> ointment
stat -> immediately
hs -> at bedtime
supp -> suppository
1/7 -> one day supply
3/7 -> three days supply
1/52 -> one week supply
2/52 -> two weeks supply
1/12 -> one month supply
